Our asphalt paving material is made up of a substance called “Hot Mix” asphalt concrete. This product is a mixture of liquid asphalt cement + aggregate - which is comprised of stone and stone dust/or sand. It is applied ‘hot’ to your driveway surface. Paving and compaction must be performed while the asphalt is sufficiently hot. We pave a layer that is 3” deep and then roll and compact the surface to complete.
The benefits of asphalt, over concrete driveways, are that it is strong and durable. It also has some “give” to the surface, which allows some natural settling. Asphalt driveways withstand the winter freezing and thawing that occurs more readily than concrete.
Overlaying asphalt on an existing driveway can be done after all the serious holes, cracks, and flaws are repaired. The paving overlay method is approached in the same way as a new driveway; using the “Hot Mix” asphalt to create a 1.5 – 2” layer over the existing surface. The same process of rolling and compacting are done to complete this project.
